Crash
Clips of this movie continually pop up in my mind, from the crash between a Mexican and an Asian at the very beginning, till the kidnapped Asians wandering in the Los Angeles’ street at last.“You know, in many cities, when you walk in the road, you pass somebody or occasionally contact somebody. But in Los Angeles, no one will touch your body. We are always hiding behind reinforcing steel bar or glass. May be we just yearn for the tactility, a feeling, only poignant crash will let you taste.”
Scholars in America have already take notice of this peculiar phenomenon: in one aspect, America exist this kind of sharp racism; in another occasion, any social behavior is afraid of being printed as racism.
This is a society of law of the jungle.
America is an immigrant country, and it is believed that Asians, who crossed the Bering Strait 30 thousands years ago, were the first flow of residents in America. And their descendants were named as American Indians or Native Americans.
Not until 1492, did Columbus’ oriental exploration discover this new land accidentally, for thousands of years, Europeans were utterly ignorant of the culture and custom of this land, though they are separated only by an ocean.
This particular discovery brought along a series of emigrant movement from Europe to America, which resulted in a long-term process of conflict, conquest and enslavement. During those 400 years, the civilization as well as population had been faced a destructive strike.
From several plots of colonies in 17th century to the present super country, which develops in the highest flight, America has gone through a series of innovations. Surely, there are a great deal of facts to explain the prompt growth and prosperity of America, and beyond all doubt, immigrant is one. But for the ceaseless immigrants from various countries, America would by no means reach the present achievement. Just as president Kart stated in 1980, the potency of America is based on the multi-culture from her peoples.
But, looking from another point of view, the expansion of immigrant and the flourish of America gradually induce the comedown of the Native Indian culture. Along with the expansion of immigrant from east to west, their soil had been deprived; their population had decreased due to disease and war as well; and their culture faced with the fringe of extinct.
Just as the Counterforce Principle in Newton Mechanics, the doom of the Indian people printed as a nightmare in the conquerors’ brain, which would never fade away. Americans used many ways to seek for the extrication from spirit. Like the churches ballyhooed that the Gospel Century was coming, and the conflict and crash in the real life was barely transitory. And there was also a theory to air that the Americans were selected by god to be superior to the other races, and it was inevitable for them to govern the world.
Due to such kind of history and social environment, in one aspect, immigrant brought a large amount of population to exploit this fertile soil; in another aspect, the new immigrants had inevitably led to the conflicts and crash among different languages, cultures, habits and custom, which sharply impacted the system of America.
Racist is not only the central idea this movie intend to deliver. Paul Haggis, the director, clarified in a talk show that the mental problems confronted by people in modern society is another idea to convey. Every person in this movie faced an intractable problem, some involved in criminal cases; some had a frantic colleague; some had been insulted or discriminated. But different people held various attitudes towards handicaps. And different reactivities had led to different results. And the fault is not in our races, but in ourselves. The embarrassment this movie faced is that in one hand, it meant to disclose the prevailing social problems, in another, it evaded from obverse discussion.
So maybe tomorrow, you will find your way home. There is no one in the isolated island. People crash with others in the daily life will finally find their way home one day. And it is just this kind of hope make people be brave to face the life which is brimming with loneliness and soreness.
The fault is not in our races, but in ourselves.
