英美文学赏析:Tess of the D'urbevilles

rencently ,I read  "Tess of the D'urbevilles" which written by a famous Englishwriter --Thomas Hardy.

The novel tells a whole pitiful life of a pretty and hardworking country girl called Tess, who lived in a village of Marlott. To her sadness, when she was seventeen, she was no longer a pure and untouched girl. then She gave birth to a baby, which didn't live long however. rumors came like a sword piercing her frail heart .And from then on Tess changed from a pure girl to a grown —up reluctantly.

For the sake of avoiding the public voice ,as well as supporting the whole family ,she bacame a milkmaid in a dairy where she knew Angel and married him. But unfortunately. when Angel knew her miserable experience, he left her and went to Brazil wihtout any compassion or hesitation.And Tess led  not only a hard but a lonely life as well.

Her frequently letters did not make any sense of his return. depression and horry adding ALac's lies made her give up prior hope which had already been fulled by confidence gradually. when she recognized the cheat which had been made up by Alec,she killed Alec by the increasing hatred from bottom of the heart..

Then she escaped and spent together with Angel three days and nights. But not foutunately enough The police found them on the moming of the fourth day. And Angel's last request from the police  was to obtain allowance to Tess's last sleep.... few days later, Tess was executed with love existed still.

This novel is a piece of landscape with beauty but desolation as well which can not be scraped away from my mind for an enough long time.

And as for the source of the tragedy of Tess is not only from the society ,but also the character of TESS herself as well.

At the capitalism society of that time ,firstly the tragedy of Tess attached to her poverty closely.Though she was hardworking ,goodness ,intelligence and beautiful as well,as a labour without power,without wealth and only with a low status in society and there was no doubt to be oppressed by capitalist.

Secondly,the unequal law is an another aspect of the social society.Tess's death at last contrast with Alec's at large obviously represents the unequal system in captilism society.

Thirdly,in captialism society religion is just a tool used by governors to cheat,fool.and also hocus the people .And as the proverb which said by Marx goes:”Christendom is being with a brand of hypocrisy."

Fourthly,Tess is just a sacrificial lamb of the so-called moral in captialism society.As for angel,Based　on　the　analysis　of　his　tragedy,　a　conclusion　can　safely　be　drawn　that　Angel　Clare　is　not　only　the　maker　of the tragedy,　but　also　the　sufferer　of　that　tragedy only for his false class moral.

when it comes to Tess's own double character,one is brave enough to against the wrong class moral and religion as well,but for the other aspect,she couldn't throughly get rid of the cord, which had already tied her tighly .And espially the later one attached closely to her fate during her whole life.

And the tragedy of Tess would inevitalbly occur ,that is to say it has its certainty and neither made by accident nor unknown fate..

This novel end of a tragedy ,and just the beauty of the tragedy bring about the convulsion which made every role full of  unforseen beauty
