Abstract
Change in approaches to vocabulary teaching and learning is widely advocated in China’s EFL teaching. An experiment on teaching vocabulary in lexical approach has been carried out among freshmen in China University of Political Science and Law. This paper gives a report on a survey of students; attitudes toward lexical approach to teaching and learning as well as strategies used to discover and consolidate phrases and expressions, which provides practical and meaningful experience to lexical teaching.

1. Introduction
The importance of the changes in vocabulary learning and instruction is evident from a common-sense observation in ESL classes: teachers have devoted much time to vocabulary teaching while the results have been disappointing. Two years’ College English learning enables students to pass the CET4 or CET6, while speaking and writing as two productive skills are still looked on as a headache. The frustration of reading a student’s writing and thinking “I know what you mean, but that’s not the way to say it”(Lewis 2001:259) is a painful experience teachers often suffer. Having a moderate vocabulary does not bring about the appropriate use of words and expressions. To probe deeply into effects of a new lexical teaching approach, this paper aims to access students’ attitude toward the study. The results of this survey will aid in designing and perfecting an appropriate approach to lexical teaching and learning.
